Attack on Titan Starts!!

This is a preview of the new anime Attack on Titan (進撃の巨人 - Shingeki no Kyojin in Japanese) that just started. The official page of the show is here, and here is the wikipedia page about it.

I watched the first episode and I have to say this is it. This is a show you need to watch if you have even a slight interest in anime, action, fantasy or TV in general. There be giants here, and they are scary.

What is Attack on Titan, exactly? It's a strange story about a society that walled itself into a big single city over a hundred years ago to keep out the titans, a race of savage giants that like nothing more than to feast on humans. For the last hundred years no one except exploratory military parties have gone outside the walls, and almost everyone assumes as long as the 50 meter high walls stand, as long as no one provokes the titans, they will be safe.

Of course that doesn't last as long as they'd hoped.

The first episode came about as close as I've ever seen in fiction in really showing just how terrifying a giant would be if you ran into one. These aren't lumbering mammoths you run around at will and take down with ease. They are big, mean, and ruthless.

The series has great artwork, done in an almost retro-style ala Berserk or maybe even Vampire Hunter D, and is directed by Tetsuro Araki, who also directed the Death Note anime as well as many other great shows like Gungrave, Black Lagoon and the mega-hit High School of the Dead.

The manga has been going on for a few years is out in English as well. Here's a link to where you can get it at amazon.

If you have the chance, watch it. And for the English only crowd out there, I really hope a translated version comes out soon.
