Six Days in Okinawa 2 (GXR A16): cats, cats, and random stuff
Alas, my trip to Okinawa had to come to an end. Man, did I have a fun time there - good shopping, great food, and lots and lots of Awamori (泡盛) a distilled rice based alcohol unique to Okinawa.
And I saw lots of cats.
And for some reason people taking pics of things with iPads. How odd.
This friendly cat was on a ledge of a nearly destroyed stone wall surrounding the old ruins of a castle. I swear, every single person that walked by got a single "Meow," greeting from him, like he was welcoming everyone to his domain.
No, seriously, this isn't a cat blog. There were just a lot of cats wandering around in Okinawa, no matter where you went.
OK, not a cat per se but this guy was a pretty cool cat in my book. He was handing out free coffee to anyone who walked by. And seemed to be having a good time of it.
OK, this pic is I guess to prove I was actually in Okinawa. This little lion/dog creature is called a shisa, and is found everywhere, always in pairs as guardians of the gates, houses or whatever.
Of course, Okinawa is also the land of snakes as I mentioned in my last post, so I thought this little stone snake statue was a nice little addition to the park in Western Naha where I found it.
And in parting I'll end with this last cat. Of course, you'll find cats just about everywhere you go in Japan but they seemed to be a bit more friendly or maybe just less scared in Okinawa. And for strays they all seemed to be quite well fed and happy.
But then again, I suppose being a stray in a place where the temp rarely gets below 60 in the winter ain't that bad.
All in all I had a great trip. It was very relaxing, and very very warm. I also went for cheap on Air Asia... if you want to plan a trip somewhere in Asia and are trying to save money I really recommend them.
