Osaka - Sumiyoshi Taisha - GXR A16


While in Osaka, I stopped by the Sumiyoshi Taisha (住吉大社), the grand shrine of the Sumiyoshi sect of Shintoism, famous not just for its place in Japanese history and religion, but also for the unique architectural features, such as the steep incline of the bridge just past the main entryway:

It is of course a fully functioning shrine, and I was lucky enough to see a wedding procession while I was there. Here is one of the priests.


There are a lot of interesting statues, fountains and monuments located throughout the premises.


It draws tons of tourists, worshippers (and photographers) every year, and for good reason - the shrine has a certain simple elegance that you don't see in many other places.
