A night at the Celt with 10 STRINGS
Friday I had a chance to head to the Warrior Celt in Ueno, one of the best British pubs you're going to find in Tokyo. It's a bit hard to find amongst the masses of tiny hole-in-the-train-tracks izakayas in the Ameyoko area, but if you find time to make the jaunt it's well worth it.
I was not aware of it but the Warrior Celt has a bunch of bands that come in to perform all the time. I'd seen a band play there before, but didn't know they had so many acts.
Friday's band was 10 STRINGS, a duet of Junji Shirota and his partner Mareka Naito. Here's a link to his page - Junji Shirota Web, where you can learn more about them and listen to a few of their tunes.
And how were they? In a word, fantastic. I'm not the biggest folk music fan to be honest but it's always better live and always better with a good band, and Mareka and Junji's playing was just superb.
So here, without further ado, is a collection of pictures I took of the band and inside the pub.
The band just getting started, above.
Everyone watches on.
That pic above is about my favorite. Nice light and shadow. Now for a few shots around.
And a nice photobomb below.
Time for a change of instruments:
Back at the bar:
The next guy had just come to Japan. Reminded me of myself, 15 years ago.
After the first set, I talked to the performers and got Junji's card. They were also kind enough to pose for a few pictures.
If you have a chance, head to the pub, which is btw also a nice place to get a Spitfire beer on tap. And they have decent pub food as well.
