Trains, trains and more trains (GXR A16)
Today's post is just a collection of pictures of trains. A friend of mine once said one of the reasons he thinks Japan's public transportation works so well is because of all the cool trains. The different styles, shapes and colors make you want to ride them even more. And I have to agree.
The one above is the high speed N'EX ultra-rapid to Narita. I had no idea it went this far west into Tokyo (not to be confused with Pepsi NEXT or the Sony NEX line of cameras).
Go on a trip in the city and there's a new line here and there waiting to be found.
I've always liked the distant view of a train station from track level like this.
This one is kind of typical for Tokyo trains but has a nice extra flourish to the paint job up front. It's completely unnecessary of course, but adds something I think.
This train station just seemed to appear out of nowhere while I was wandering around Tokyo.
Of course this little orange light rail line is in Osaka. You can still find lines like this in a few places in some of the major cities. I wish I could slip back in time to see Tokyo when the streets were a constant stream of little trains like this with traffic flowing around them.
But times change. This beast (above) is the new face of rail travel in the Osaka area. And I have to say it was a really nice ride - like floating on silk as the scenery flew past.
No wonder you see so many shutterbugs hanging out around train stations here. I think I've seen more huge lenses and expensive cameras being used to shoot train lines and the many varied trains on them here than anything else. If you have time, look around the web for train photos taken in Japan.
For a start, here is a list on flickr, or this search works as well, or you can see more trains with this search here.
