Galaxy SII update?

It's is official now. NTT Docomo has released the update for the Samsung Galaxy SII to android 4.0.3 (listed on their page  here). It's only available on WiFi or by connecting to a computer. So go out, get it and let the world know you're one of the first people in Japan with a wonderful ICS handset.

After the update, which took around a half hour in total, my phone is now fully up and running and let me tell you I like what I see so far. Screen scrolling feels a lot more snappy, almost as good as the Galaxy SIII I saw in a shop the other day. The new fonts and ICS interface is also crisp and refreshing, like getting a hose full of cold water on a hot summer day. I'm not sure about the odd looking setup in some apps, like especially Gmail, but meh, I'll get used to it. The home button bug has also been fixed completely, so no having to press and repress it again and again. A big help.

Two minor bugs I've seen so far: The simple calendar widget I love occasionally doesn't show anything. Irritating but fixed by clicking on the calendar app itself. Also sometimes when you hit the menu button it seems to lag just a bit. Not huge but it shows that not every kink is out of the system yet.

Update: Holy crap is the battery life better. My Galaxy has always had a decent battery life but since the update to ICS it's really really good. The other night I was at 78% after a full day's use. The best thing is that it feels like most apps aren't affecting my battery at all. Of course videos still cost me some %s, but simple stuff like typing emails and reading RSS feeds doesn't seem to have any impact. Color me very impressed.

The final verdict: Anyone with a Docomo Galaxy S2 has to take the plunge. You won't regret it at all.
